Pagoda of the Guanggong Chan Master (Guanggong Chanshi Ta 廣公禪師塔), Yunju Temple 雲居寺 Balkwill, Stephanie; Liu, Yifeng; Wu, Tzu-Wen; Zhang, Lusi; Liu, Yiling; Zhu, Zhaofeng

Description

This pagoda is located at the east side of the North Tower (Bei Ta 北塔) of Yunju Temple (Yunju si 雲居寺) in Beijing 北京 and is built in the 2nd year of Taihe 泰和 (1202) in the Jin Dynasty 晉 (266-420). It is made of white marble. It is 2.64 meters high and has an octagonal straight and angular shape. The stone column is divided into 2 parts: the upper and lower floors. On the lower floor eight buddha statues have been embossed. On its front is the inscription "the Pagoda of the Guanggong Chan Master" (Guanggong Chanshi Ta 廣公禪師塔). On its forehead is the inscription of a buddhist epigram, consisting of 419 Chinese characters. This tower was erected by Huitan (惠談), a disciple of Guanggong in commemoration of his teacher. The side of the stone column is 16.5cm long, the side of the central lotus is 13cm long, the side of the largest lotus is 47cm long, the side of the bottom base is 42cm long, and the side of the broad stone column on the base is 32cm long.
