Huge Stone Bowl in front of the Vairocana Hall (Pilu Dian 毗盧殿), Fayuan Temple (法源寺) Balkwill, Stephanie; Liu, Yifeng; Wu, Tzu-Wen; Zhang, Lusi; Liu, Yiling; Zhu, Zhaofeng

Description

This huge stone bowl, planted with lotus flowers, stands in front of the Vairocana Hall (Pilu Dian 毗盧殿 ) of the Fayuan Temple (Fayuan si 法源寺) in Beijing 北京. The bowl itself was made in the Ming 明 dynasty (1368-1644), but the base was made in the Yuan 元 dynasty (1279-1368). The whole sculpture has very exquisite patterns, like the wave pattern with sea god beast such as dragon, unicorn and so on. The overall height is 147cm and the pot height is 66cm. Image 01 and Image 02 shows the whole stone bowl, Image 03 to Image 07 shows the various patterns on the bowl, and Image 08 to Image 10 shows the pattern on the base and its legs.
