Buddha flanked by two disciples, two bodhisattvas and sixteen arhats, Niche 69, the southern cliff (南岩), Yuanjue Cave (圓覺洞) Anderl, Christoph
Description
Niche 69 is located in the southern cliff (南岩) of Yuanjue Cave Cliff Sculpture Scenic Area (圓覺洞摩崖造像風景區), Yujishan (雲居山), situated in the northeast of Anyue County (安岳縣), Ziyang City (資陽巿), Sichuan. The southern cliff contains fifty-eight niches (Niches 15 to 72) of rock carvings, mostly dating from the Tang Dynasty 唐 (618-907) to the Five Dynasties 五代 (907-960). The images in this niche are severely eroded, and all of their heads are missing. The central Buddha image wears a double-collar drooping cassock and is seated on a lotus throne with crossed legs, holding an unknown item with both hands. Traces of two standing disciple figures remain on either side of the Buddha image. The left bodhisattva who rides an elephant is Samantabhadra (Puxian 普賢). A servant taming the elephant is depicted in front of the animal. The right bodhisattva riding a lion is Mañjuśrī (Wenshu 文殊) and a servant is portrayed before the lion. Twenty-eight vertical lines of inscriptions are found on the front face of the rectangular platform on which the Buddha and bodhisattva figures are placed. It indicates that this niche was established in 909 CE (武成二年) of Former Shu (前蜀) during the Five Dynasties. The sixteen arhat statues are distributed in two layers, eight on either side of the central Buddha and bodhisattvas. The images in the upper layer are better preserved. All of the arhats are in sitting posture. Small human figures and water vases are depicted before some of the arhats.
