Description

Niche 62 is located in the southern cliff (南岩) of Yuanjue Cave Cliff Sculpture Scenic Area (圓覺洞摩崖造像風景區), Yujishan (雲居山), situated in the northeast of Anyue County (安岳縣), Ziyang City (資陽巿), Sichuan. The southern cliff contains fifty-eight niches (Niches 15 to 72) of rock carvings, mostly dating from the Tang Dynasty 唐 (618-907) to the Five Dynasties 五代 (907-960). The middle wall contains five severely eroded images. The central figure is lost. Only traces of an oval body halo and a peach-shaped head halo trimmed with flame patterns remain. Two standing disciples are depicted on both sides of the central figure. Both deciples have circular halos and wear monk’s robes. Their hands form Añjali Mudras (heshi 合十). The lower body of the right disciple is damaged. The bodhisattva on the left is seated on a throne in a Lalitasana position and has a peach-shaped head halo. Its costume is adorned with pieces of jewellery. The bodhisattva on the right is severely damaged. The left side wall of this niche has a severely eroded human figure. Only its head and upper body remain. Descriptions of the photos: Overview of the niche [Image 01]. Close-up of the left side of the niche [Image 02].
