A Buddha flanked by two bodhisattvas and two disciples, Niche 59, the southern cliff (南岩), Yuanjue Cave (圓覺洞) Anderl, Christoph
Description
Niche 59 is located in the southern cliff (南岩) of Yuanjue Cave Cliff Sculpture Scenic Area (圓覺洞摩崖造像風景區), Yujishan (雲居山), situated in the northeast of Anyue County (安岳縣), Ziyang City (資陽巿), Sichuan. The southern cliff contains fifty-eight niches (Niches 15 to 72) of rock carvings, mostly dating from the Tang Dynasty 唐 (618-907) to the Five Dynasties 五代 (907-960). The central Buddha image wears a double-collar drooping cassock and is seated on a lotus throne with crossed legs. His left hand touches his left knee, and the right hand is damaged. The halos behind his head and body are peach-shaped with flame patterns. Two standing disciple figures wearing monks’ robes flank the central Buddha image. They have circular halos and are making the Añjali Mudra (heshi 合十). Both bodhisattvas on either side sit in European postures on lotus thrones with their feet stepping on lotus pedestals. Their outer hands touch their knees while the inner hands are damaged. They wear tall crowns decorated with curling tendril patterns. Their peach-shaped halos are decorated with flame patterns. The bodhisattva on the left side has a small Buddha figure on its crown, while that of the bodhisattva on the right side is decorated with a vase in the middle and ribbons on either side. The costume of the right bodhisattva is adorned with jewellery. Traces of a pair of feitian 飛天 (Sanskrit: apsaras) images are found on either side of the Buddha’s head. Descriptions of the photos: Overview of the niche [Image 01, Image 02]. Metadata created by: Sau Ling Wendy Yu.
