Buddha flanked by two disciples and two bodhisattvas, Niche 47, the southern cliff (南岩), Yuanjue Cave (圓覺洞) Anderl, Christoph

Description

Niche 47 is located in the southern cliff (南岩) of Yuanjue Cave Cliff Sculpture Scenic Area (圓覺洞摩崖造像風景區), Yujishan (雲居山), situated in the northeast of Anyue County (安岳縣), Ziyang City (資陽巿), Sichuan. The southern cliff contains fifty-eight niches (Niches 15 to 72) of rock carvings, mostly dating from the Tang Dynasty 唐 (618-907) to the Five Dynasties 五代 (907-960). The images of this niche are severely eroded. The central part depicts a two-layered altar with a Buddha statue flanked by two disciples and two bodhisattvas. The Buddha, whose head is missing, is seated on a lotus throne with crossed legs. The peach-shaped halo is trimmed by flame patterns. Above the Buddha statue is a canopy flanked by a pair of feitian 飛天 (Sanskrit: apsaras). The two standing disciples form Añjali Mudras (heshi 合十) while the two bodhisattvas are seated in European postures on lotus pedestals. The bodhisattvas’ heads are missing, but their peach-shaped head halos remain. Both appear to hold unknown objects in their hands. The niche wall is decorated with nine layers of bodhisattva images. Since these images are heavily eroded, their identities are uncertain. Descriptions of the photos: Overview of the niche [Image 01]. Close-up of the images on the altar [Image 02].
