Buddha flanked by two disciples, two bodhisattvas and sixteen arhats, Niche 40, the southern cliff (南岩), Yuanjue Cave (圓覺洞) Anderl, Christoph
Description
Niche 40 is located in the southern cliff (南岩) of Yuanjue Cave Cliff Sculpture Scenic Area (圓覺洞摩崖造像風景區), Yujishan (雲居山), situated in the northeast of Anyue County (安岳縣), Ziyang City (資陽巿), Sichuan. The southern cliff contains fifty-eight niches (Niches 15 to 72) of rock carvings, mostly dating from the Tang Dynasty 唐 (618-907) to the Five Dynasties 五代 (907-960). The images inside this niche are severely eroded, and the niche ceiling is damaged. The central Buddha image is missing its head. The Buddha wears a double-collar drooping cassock and is seated on a lotus throne with crossed legs. Two standing disciples are placed on either side of the central Buddha. Both disciples form Añjali Mudras (heshi 合十). The two bodhisattvas are sitting in European postures with hands holding unidentifiable objects. Inscriptions indicate that the left one is Mahāsthāmaprāpta (Dashizhi pusa 大勢至菩薩) and the right one is Avalokiteśvara (Guanyin 觀音). Inscriptions are found on the front face of the rectangular platform on which the Buddha, disciples and bodhisattva figures are placed. It indicates that a male donor supported the construction of this nich in 1097 CE (紹聖四年) during the Northern Song Dynasty 北宋 (960-1127). The sixteen arhat statues are distributed in two layers: four on the right and left side walls and twelve on either side of the central wall. All the arhats are in a sitting posture and their heads are missing. Small human figures and water vases are depicted before their thrones. Moreover, donor names are engraved on the upper right side of some arhat statues. The black fret patterns on the halos of the arhats were likely painted in later periods.
