Buddha flanked by two disciples, two bodhisattvas and sixteen arhats, Niche 39, the southern cliff (南岩), Yuanjue Cave (圓覺洞) Anderl, Christoph

Description

Niche 39 is located in the southern cliff (南岩) of Yuanjue Cave Cliff Sculpture Scenic Area (圓覺洞摩崖造像風景區), Yujishan (雲居山), situated in the northeast of Anyue County (安岳縣), Ziyang City (資陽巿), Sichuan. The southern cliff contains fifty-eight niches (Niches 15 to 72) of rock carvings, mostly dating from the Tang Dynasty 唐 (618-907) to the Five Dynasties 五代 (907-960). The central Buddha image wears a double-collar drooping cassock. His head is missing and he is seated on a lotus throne with crossed legs. The ceiling above the Buddha depicts a big lotus flower trimmed with floral patterns representing a canopy. Two small shrines with standing disciple figures are carved on either side of the Buddha image. Leaves representing the bodhi tree are adorned on the wall above the disciple figures. The left bodhisattva holding a wish-granting sceptre (ruyi 如意) and riding an elephant is Samantabhadra (Puxian 普賢). There is a servant taming the elephant on the bodhisattva’s left side. This image is severely eroded. The right bodhisattva riding a lion is Mañjuśrī (Wenshu 文殊). The head of the lion and the servant on the right side are damaged. Inscriptions are found on the front face of the rectangular platform on which the Buddha and bodhisattva figures are placed. It indicates that a female donor (Yuwen xiao’erniang 宇文小二娘) supported the construction of this nich in 1097 CE (紹聖四年) during the Northern Song Dynasty 北宋 (960-1127). Fourteen of the sixteen arhat statues remain. They are distributed in two layers: four in the right side wall, either side of the central wall and two in the left side wall. All of the arhats are in a sitting posture and most of their heads are missing. Small human figures representing attendants are depicted in between the arhats. The black fret patterns in the halos and the blue pigments on the costumes of all images were likely painted in later periods.
