Description

Niche 12 is located in Mingshan Temple (茗山寺), situated in Dingxin Town (頂新鄉), Anyue County (安岳縣), Ziyang City (資陽巿), Sichuan. The site contains twelve rock carving niches, mostly dating from the late Northern Song Dynasty 北宋 (960–1127) to the early Southern Song Dynasty 南宋 (1127–1279). The niche depicts eleven standing guardian deities, most are severely eroded. They wear warrior’s attire, holding different objects (from right to left): (1) a bird, (2) a fan, (3) a sabre, (4) a snake, (5) a sword, (6) a long rod, (7) the right hand is damaged while the left hand touches an unidentified object on the ground, (8) both hands tear open a cloth showing a face inside, (9) the left hand appears to be grasping something, (10) both hands are damaged and (11) both arms are damaged. The eleventh deity, which looks like a heavenly king, has an auspicious cloud motif above his head, decorated with a seated Buddha image. Small circular shrines with seated Buddha images are depicted above the other guardian deities. Descriptions of the photos: Key to the images [Image 01, Image 02].
