Description

Memorial Tablet Hall (Jikōdō 慈光堂), the special chamber for the veneration of laities after passing away, of Manpukuji (萬福寺), an Ōbaku 黄檗 Zen head temple in Uji 宇治, Kyoto prefecture 京都府, Japan. The Chinese name of the hall, 慈光(ci guang), represents the great kindness of Buddhas and Bodhisattvas for sentient beings. Initially, it was used exclusively for lay disciples of the Ōbaku lineage. Years later, it has extended to ancestors' veneration if requested. Image 01 shows the front view of Memorial Tablet Hall. The upper plaque is called Memorial Tablet Hall (納骨堂), providing its embracement for secular purposes. Image 02 illustrates the couplet inscribed: 廣利眾生慈力圓, which means the greatest power of kindness for all sentient beings. Image 03 illustrates the couplet inscribed in Chinese on the left side. Image 04 shows the upper plaque at the entrance, which is inscribed: 大願王. It portrays the ultimate willpower of Buddhas and Bodhisattvas. Image 05 shows the overview of the inner hall of the great kindness (慈光堂), which is the official name for the chamber.
