Two plaques and four couplets inside the Dharma Hall (Hatto 法堂), Manpukuji (萬福寺) Li, Erjia; Ma, Zhujun; Lin, Grace Cheng-Ying; Cilangasan, Malang
Description
The upper plaque (Image 02) with the inscription "法堂" (Dharma Hall) of Manpukuji (萬福寺), an Ōbaku 黄檗 Zen head temple in Uji 宇治, Kyoto prefecture 京都府, Japan. The upper plaque is hung on the raised platform and was written by Yinyuan Longqi (Jp. Ingen Ryūki) 隠元隆琦 (1592-1673). The upper plaque (Image 02) is dated "寬文四年甲辰中秋吉旦" (On the auspicious mid-autumn day of the fourth year of the Kanbun era (1664)), with the signature "開山老人隱元琦書" (Written by the old Master of the mountain, Yin Yuan). Beneath the upper plaque (Image 02) is the lower plague (Image 05) with the inscription "毘尼堂"(Vinaya Alter). On both sides of the two plagues, there are four couplets hanging on the four pillars (Image 01). The left of the inner two couplets (Image 03) reads "大用現前時雲龍際會生頭角" (The mighty reveal their talents when time and opportunity converge like a dragon in the clouds), and the left inner couplet (Image 04) reads "全機展拓處凡聖都來立下風" (Both the mortals and the saints come to compete at the place where creativity is fully expanded). The right of the two outer couplets (Image 07) reads "等閒坐斷十方任是蘇彌燈王也須退步" (Easily meditate through the ten direction, even the Sumeru Lamp King has to step back). It was written by Duzhan Xingying 獨湛性瑩 (Jp. Dokutan Shōkei, 1628-1706). The left outer couplet (Image 06) reads "信手拈來條棒苟非沒量漢子誰敢承當" (Casually grasp a club, who dare to take if he is not a man of unmeasurably excellent quality).
