Outward-facing couplets near to the offertory box in the Great Shrine Hall (Daiyū Hōden 大雄寶殿), Manpukiji (萬福寺) Liu, Jeffrey; Wan, Ziling

Description

The outward-facing couplet flanking the alter in the Great Shrine Hall (Daiyū Hōden 大雄寶殿) in Manpuku-ji Temple (萬福寺), an Ōbaku 黄檗 Zen temple in Uji 宇治, Kyoto prefecture 京都府, Japan. The couplet on the right side of the offertory box reads "萬德殿中移來一會耆闍崛" (A momentary manifestation of Vulture Peak is relocated to the hall of myriad virtues) (Image 01). Outward-facing couplet on the left side of the offertory box reads "千華臺上現出本身盧遮那" (The truth body of Vairocana Buddha is revealed on the platform of a thousand splendors) (Image 02). They are written by Master Etusan Dōsō 悅山道宗 (1629 -1709), the seventh abbot of Manpuku-ji.
