Tortoise-shaped Pedestals at Yeongamsa Temple Site (靈巖寺址 ), Hapcheon Zhang, Biao

Description

Tortoise-shaped Pedestals at Yeongamsa Temple Site (靈巖寺址 ), Hapcheon. These two tortoise-shaped pedestals were made to support stone steles. They are situated on each side of the West Building Site of Yeongamsa Temple Site (靈巖寺址). Both pedestals are presumed to date back to the turn of the Unified Silla 統一新羅 (668-935) and Goryeo 高麗 (918-1392) periods. Image 01 shows the east tortoise-shaped pedestal, which is missing its forelegs. A jewel is found in its mouth. Image 02 shows its back, engraved with hexagonal shell patterns. Image 03 shows its tail.
