Niche 278, Beishan Rock Carvings (北山石刻) Anderl, Christoph
Description
This niche is located in Beishan Rock Carvings (北山石刻), Fowan (佛灣), Dazu (大足) District, Chongqing. The niche, which is severely eroded, depicts three seated images. The central and the right images are damaged. Two standing figures flank the central image. The left one holds a large bowl, while the remains of the right one indicate that it carried a staff. The remains of a pair of feitian 飛天 (Sanskrit: apsaras) are shown in the upper corner near the niche frame. Besides, there are traces of two layers of bodhisattvas on either side wall.
