Description

This complex of niches is located in Beishan Rock Carvings (北山石刻), Fowan (佛灣), Dazu (大足) District, Chongqing. Niche 275 depicts two seated images whose faces are lost. The left one with an oval halo is seated in a European posture on a Sumeru throne with feet steeping on lotus pedestals. The bodhisattva’s left hand holds a stem with a lotus bud. With a circular halo, the bodhisattva on the right is seated in a Lalitasana posture with its left leg crossed and the right hanging down, stepping on a lotus flower. This bodhisattva has a pearl in his left hand and a staff in his right hand. Niche 276 depicts a bodhisattva with a circular halo seated in a Lalitasana posture with its left leg crossed and the right hanging down. A beast and a lotus flower are carved before the Sumeru throne. The bodhisattva has a pearl in his left hand and a staff in his right hand. Niche 277 contains two standing bodhisattvas. The left one has an oval body halo and a circular head halo. He has a pearl in his left hand and a staff in his right hand. The halos of the bodhisattva on the right are similar to the left.
