Niche 273, Beishan Rock Carvings (北山石刻) Anderl, Christoph

Description

This niche is located in Beishan Rock Carvings (北山石刻), Fowan (佛灣), Dazu (大足) District, Chongqing. The middle wall depicts a forty-two-armed bodhisattva. The two upper hands above the bodhisattva’s head hold a seated Buddha image. Each of the rest hands carries an object or forms a mudra. The bodhisattva wears a tall crown decorated with curling tendril patterns. Besides, the costume is adorned with jewellery. He is seated in a European posture on a Sumeru throne with feets stepping on lotus pedestals. Two kneeling figures flank the throne. The head of the left one is lost. Two standing figures are depicted on either side wall. The left one has a cup in both hands, while the right carries a long stick and prayer beads. A lotus flower is carved in the middle of the ceiling, flanking with a pair of feitian 飛天 (Sanskrit: apsaras). Ten seated Buddha images are carved above the niche frame. The two side walls outside the niche contain two small shrines with bodhisattva images, all severely eroded. Descriptions of the photos: Close-up the niche[1, 2].
