Niches 265 and 267, Beishan Rock Carvings (北山石刻) Anderl, Christoph; Yu, Sau Ling Wendy

Description

These two niches are located in Beishan Rock Carvings (北山石刻), Fowan (佛灣), Dazu (大足) District, Chongqing. Niche 265 is damaged. Remnants of two seated images are found. Niche 267 depicts two seated bodhisattva images. Both are seated in European postures with feets stepping on lotus pedestals. The left one, with an oval halo, holds a stem of a lotus bud and a leaf in the left hand. The right arm of this bodhisattva is lost. The right one has a circular body halo and a peach-shaped head halo trimmed with flame patterns. This bodhisattva’s face, hands and part of the lower body are damaged. A small standing figure is carved near the bottom of the left niche frame. Besides, several small images are depicted on a damaged wall outside the left niche frame.
