Description

This complex of niches is located in Beishan Rock Carvings (北山石刻), Fowan (佛灣), Dazu (大足) District, Chongqing. Niche 260 depicts an octagonal pillar with two guardian deities decorated on the base. The upper part of the pillar is lost. Besides, the upper part of the left side wall has three standing images in an auspicious cloud motif. The pillar’s body is carved with the text of the Sutra of the Victorious Buddha-Crown Mantra (Chinese: fo ding zun sheng tuo luo ni jing 佛頂尊勝陀羅尼經, Sanskrit: Uṣṇīṣavijaya dhāraṇīsūtra), dated to 955 CE (後蜀廣政十八年). Niche 261 has a pillar that is severely eroded. Niche 262 depicts an octagonal pillar. Its design and condition are similar to the one in Niche 260. Three standing images in an auspicious cloud motif are depicted on the upper part of either side wall. Niche 266 is damaged. It contains the remains of two shrines with a single image.
