Transformation tableau of Amitabha Sutra (overview), Niche 245, Beishan Rock Carvings (北山石刻) Anderl, Christoph

Description

This niche is located in Beishan Rock Carvings (北山石刻), Fowan (佛灣), Dazu (大足) District, Chongqing. It is the most complicated rock carving on this site. In the middle of the central wall, it depicts a seated Amitabha Buddha and two seated attendant bodhisattvas on lotus thrones. Many small images surround them, and those images expand to the middle part of the side walls. The three images in the centre have beautifully decorated canopies above their heads. They are surrounded by kalaviṅkas ( human-headed birds) riding auspicious clouds and various birds. Each canopy has a pagoda on its top with structures linking them to form a set of architecture extending from the upper part of the middle wall to the ceiling and either side wall. Birds and musical instruments decorate the ceiling of this niche. Three platforms are depicted below the three central figures. Images of donors are carved on the platforms, and a pair of boats on each side. Several panels depicting buildings and human figures are depicted at the bottom. The niche frame on both sides depicts panels of the Sixteen Contemplations. Donor images expand to the side wall outside the right frame. Inscriptions dated to 896 CE (唐乾寧三年) are found, indicating that this is a niche for the transformation tableau of Amitāyur-buddhānusmṛti-sūtra (Fo shuo guan wu liang shou jing 佛說觀無量壽經, Visualization Sutra).
