Avalokitesvara and attendant bodhisattvas, Niche 180, Beishan Rock Carvings (北山石刻) Anderl, Christoph

Description

This niche is located in Beishan Rock Carvings (北山石刻), Fowan (佛灣), Dazu (大足) District, Chongqing. Avalokitesvara seated in a Lalitasana sitting posture on a Sumeru throne is depicted in the middle of the niche. The bodhisattva wears a high crown decorated with curling tendril patterns and a small Buddha motif in the centre. The head halo is circular. The base of the bodhisattva’s throne is adorned with floral patterns and two lotus buds. Moreover, there is a circular canopy above Avalokitesvara. Twelve standing bodhisattvas flank Avalokitesvara. All of them have circular halos and wear beautifully decorated high crowns. Besides, they carry different objects in their hands. Most of them are well preserved apart from the pair near the niche frame. Besides, there are twelve small seated bodhisattva motifs above the standing bodhisattvas. All of them are seated on lotus thrones. One is riding a lion on the left side wall, and another on an elephant on the right side wall. Descriptions of the photos: Overview of the niche [1].
