Description

This complex of niches is located in Beishan Rock Carvings (北山石刻), Fowan (佛灣), Dazu (大足) District, Chongqing. Niche 70-1: Eleven figures are depicted in three rows, three in the top row and four in each of the middle and bottom rows. Most have circular halos. Since they are severely eroded, their identities are unknown. Niche 70: A bodhisattva seated in Lalitasana posture on a rock throne is depicted. Since it is severely eroded, its identity is unknown. Niche 73: Fourteen figures are depicted. The middle is a Buddha image seated with crossed legs on a lotus throne. The head is lost, while the peach-shaped head halo and oval body halo decorated with flame patterns remain. Two bodhisattvas flank the Buddha. The heads and the upper torsos of both are damaged. The bodhisattva on the Buddha’s left holds a jewel with both hands, while the one on the right carries a vase with his left hand. Above the bodhisattva there are remains of a pair of feitian 飛天 (Sanskrit: apsaras). Four female donor images with damaged heads, appear next to the bodhisattva on the Buddha’s right. They join their palms together to form the Añjali Mudras (Chinese: heshi 合十). Five male donors accompany the bodhisattva on the Buddha’s left. The one next to the bodhisattva, whose head is damaged, forms an Añjali Mudra. The second one’s upper body is damaged. In front of the second donor is a small child. The third and fourth are badly damaged. Niche 75: A figure with halos decorated by flame patterns stands on a lotus pedestal. Niche 76: A pair of severely eroded standing images remain.
