Description

This niche is located in Beishan Rock Carvings (北山石刻), Fowan (佛灣), Dazu (大足) District, Chongqing. The middle wall depicts the seated statue of monk Sizhou (泗洲). The figure wears a cross-collared robe and a wind hat, seated cross-legged on a high-backed chair. A pingji (憑几, a type of side table) with three legs decorated with beast faces is placed before him. A pair of disciples flank him on either side. The left holds a staff, while the right has a water vase in both hands. The left side wall depicts a seated figure and a standing figure. The seated figure holds a cane decorated with an angle ruler, scissors, and a monkey motif on its top. The setting on the right side wall is similar to that on the left. The seated figure wears a wind cap while the standing figure is severely damaged. An inscription dated to 1126 CE (北宋靖康元年) indicating this is the niche for Monk Sizhou is found in the niche.
