Description

This rock engraving is located in Beishan Rock Carvings (北山石刻), Fowan (佛灣), Dazu (大足) District, Chongqing. The engraving is divided into three parts. The middle part depicts the episode of Vimalakīrti (Chinese: weimojie 維摩詰) debating Mañjuśrī (Chinese: Wenshu pusa 文殊菩薩) recounted in the Vimalakīrti Nirdeśa Sūtra. The old man seated on the couch on the left is Vimalakīrti. He is accompanied by three attendants. A screen with a landscape scene is portrayed behind his couch. Two sets of inscriptions dated 1134 CE (紹興四年) during the Southern Song dynasty are carved on the left side of the screen. Mañjuśrī on the couch on the right side is accompanied by one attendant bodhisattva and night disciples. Mañjuśrī and his attendant have circular halos. The depiction of the disciples in the upper right corner is damaged. The upper part of the engraving has several frames made of auspicious cloud motifs. The carvings inside those cloud motifs are unclear. Another inscription dated to the same year as the above two is in the top right corner. The bottom part of this engraving has mostly flaked away. Some remants appartently of standing figures remain, but they cannot be identified. Source: Dazu shike yanjiuyuan 大足石刻研究院.
