Description

This niche is located in Beishan Rock Carvings (北山石刻), Fowan (佛灣), Dazu (大足) District, Chongqing. The central wall depicts a bodhisattva sitting in a Lalitasana posture with its right leg stepping on a rock throne and the left leg hanging down. The bodhisattva wears a long skirt and is adorned with a pretty headdress and accessories of jade and pearls. Shawls drape by the two arms from both shoulders. Two lines representing the light illuminated by the bodhisattva are extended from his cheeks to the niche ceiling. The traces of a water vase are visible on the upper left side of the bodhisattva’s circular halo. Two attendants flank the bodhisattva. The one on his left holds an Añjali Mudra (Chinese: heshi 合十). Two standing donor images remain on each side wall.
