Niche 111, Beishan Rock Carvings (北山石刻) Anderl, Christoph

Description

This niche is located in Beishan Rock Carvings (北山石刻), Fowan (佛灣), Dazu (大足) District, Chongqing. Since the niche is severely eroded, not all of the figures can be identified. There are two layers of carvings. The upper layer contains two major statues decorated with circular halos. The one on the left seems to be sitting on a chair with a back. Both figures are flanked by attendants on their sides. Three smaller figures seated on lotus thrones above these two major statues are probably Buddhas. The bottom layer contains several standing figures. All are badly damaged.
