Niches 126 and 128, Beishan Rock Carvings (北山石刻) Anderl, Christoph

Description

These two niches are located in Beishan Rock Carvings (北山石刻), Fowan (佛灣), Dazu (大足) District, Chongqing. Niche 126 depicts a seated bodhisattva with a pair of donor images. The bodhisattva wears a double-collar drooping cassock and a long skirt. The halos behind his back and head are round-shaped. His headdress and necklace are decorated with jewellery patterns. Besides, a three-legged incense burner is carved in front of his throne. The donor figure on the left side wall is a male, while the one on the right is a female. Both hold flat sceptres with both hands. Niche 128 contains three bodhisattva and two donor images. A bodhisattva on the central wall is seated in a Lalitasana posture with one leg crossed and another leg hanging down, stepping on a lotus flower. A peach-shaped head halo and circular body halo are outlined on the wall with a canopy of double-layer lotus petals above them. The right hand, which hangs on the right knee, holds a string of prayer beads, while the left hand touches the throne. The trousers of the bodhisattva are also decorated with jewellery patterns. The flanking bodhisattvas are similar to the one in the central wall. The one on the right side is better preserved. This bodhisattva is seated in a European posture with both feet resting on lotus flowers. A small donor image accompanies each bodhisattva on the side wall. The one on the left is male, while that on the right is female. Descriptions of the photos: Key to the niches [1] Overview of the niches [2] Metadata created by: Sau Ling Wendy Yu.
