Description

This niche is located in Beishan Rock Carvings (北山石刻), Fowan (佛灣), Dazu (大足) District, Chongqing. The central wall depicts a buddha wearing a double-collar drooping cassock, sitting with crossed legs on a lotus throne. The buddha has a peach-shaped head halo trimmed with flame patterns and an oval body halo. His left hand holds a bowl. The right hand in front of his chest is damaged. The left side wall has a six-armed bodhisattva and two small donor figures. The bodhisattva is seated on a rock throne. Each hand of the two upper arms hold a circular plate. The middle left hand holds a bowl, while the right arm is placed in front of the body. The lower left hand has a noose, and the right holds a sword. The two standing donor figures form Añjali Mudras (Chinese: heshi 合十). The setting of the right side wall is similar. The bodhisattva of this side wall wears a headdress with long ribbons on both sides. Both bodhisattvas have circular halos.
