Female figure with child, Niche 122, Beishan Rock Carvings (北山石刻) Anderl, Christoph

Description

This niche is located in Beishan Rock Carvings (北山石刻), Fowan (佛灣), Dazu (大足) District, Chongqing. The central wall depicts a female figure holding a child. The figure sits on a chair with a back and wears a crown decorated with a feng 鳯 (phoenix) motif. She holds a child in her left hand, while her right hand touches her right knee. The child, whose head is lost, carries a round object with both hands. A standing female attendant and a sitting wetnurse are depicted on the left side wall. The wetnurse is breastfeeding a child. The right side wall contains a standing female attendant and two children. A pair of couplets are carved on either side of the outer frame. The couplets, signed by Yang Zixiao 楊子孝, date to the Republican period (1911-1949). The Chinese characters of the couplets are “祥麟不作無緣嗣 (left), 威鳳偏臨積善家 (right)”.
