Two bodhisattvas with attendants, Niche 121, Beishan Rock Carvings (北山石刻) Anderl, Christoph
Description
This niche is located in Beishan Rock Carvings (北山石刻), Fowan (佛灣), Dazu (大足) District, Chongqing. A pair of bodhisattvas is depicted on the central wall. Both are in a Lalitasana posture with one leg crossed and another leg hanging down, stepping on a lotus flower. The bodhisattva with a circular halo on the left wears a double-collar drooping cassock. His left hand holds a jewel illuminating a line of light that forms three circles and extends to the left sidewall. The right hand forms a mudra in front of the bodhisattva’s chest. The bodhisattva on the right has a circular head halo and an oval body halo. The headdress is decorated with floral motifs and a seated Buddha, while the necklace and pants are adorned with jewellery. Shawls drape by the two arms from each shoulder. This bodhisattva also holds a wish-granting sceptre (Chinese: ruyi 如意). A rectangular canopy appears above the two bodhisattvas. An uninscribed plaque-shaped motif is also carved between them. The left side wall contains four figures: a male attendant holding a staff, two smaller standing figures next to him, and an auspicious cloud motif with a pavilion and a kneeling figure on the upper part of the wall. The setting on the right side wall is similar to that of the left, but the figures are female characters. Descriptions of the photos: Overview of niche [1] Close-up of left side wall [2] Close-up of right side wall [3] Close-up of central wall [4] Metadata created by: Sau Ling Wendy Yu.
