Six-armed bodhisattva with attendants, Niche 119, Beishan Rock Carvings (北山石刻) Anderl, Christoph

Description

This niche is located in Beishan Rock Carvings (北山石刻), Fowan (佛灣), Dazu (大足) District, Chongqing. In the central wall, a six-armed bodhisattva is seated on a throne with a European posture. Both feet step on lotus flowers that emerge from the bottom of the throne. The lotus flowers are accompanied by two leaves. The bodhisattva wears a pretty headdress adorned with floral motifs and pants decorated with jewellery. The peach-shaped head halo is trimmed with flame patterns, of which the tip is attached to a motif of double-layer lotus flowers on the ceiling. A small figure is depicted on an auspicious cloud raised from the hands of the bodhisattva’s upper arms. The middle left hand holds a noose, while the right hand has a sword. The lower left hand carries a bowl in front of the belly, and the right hand has a willow branch. The bodhisattva is flanked by two standing attedants: a male figure on the left and a female one on the right. Each side wall also contains a standing figure. The one on the left side wall has a circular halo and wears a cassock. Since the image on the right side wall is damaged, its identity is unknown. Metadata created by: Sau Ling Wendy Yu.
