Description

This complex of niches is located in Beishan Rock Carvings (北山石刻), Fowan (佛灣), Dazu (大足) District, Chongqing. Niche 59: Three severely eroded figures. Niche 60: Probably a Thousand-armed Avalokitesvara (Thousand-armed Guanyin; Chinese: 千手觀音). The remains of two figures appear on either edge of the niche. Niche 61: Seven figures are depicted, all severely eroded. The combination might be three Buddhas flanked by two disciples and two donors. Niche 62: Two severely eroded seated figures. Niche 63: One severely eroded figure. Niche 64: One severely eroded figure. Niche 65: Six figures are depicted. Two attendants flank the central figure seated in a European sitting posture. There is one donor image in front of the left attendant and two in front of the right attendant. Since they are badly damaged, their identities are unknown.
