Description

This complex of niches is located in Beishan Rock Carvings (北山石刻), Fowan (佛灣), Dazu (大足) District, Chongqing. Since all the figures are severely eroded, their identities are unknown. Niche 13 (upper right): A seated statue with halos behind its head and back Niche 14 (lower right): A seated statue with halos behind its head and back. A pair of feitian 飛天 (Sanskrit: apsaras) is depicted on the lintel. Niche 15 (upper left): A seated statue with a halo on its head. The statue is in a Lalitasana sitting posture with its left leg crossed and the right hanging down, stepping on a lotus flower. A small beast is carved next to the Sumeru throne on the statue's right side. Since it is severely eroded, the identity is unknown. A feitian is found on the left-hand corner of the lintel. Another figure stands at the left edge of the niche. Niche 16 (lower left): Four statues on the central wall, both side walls and the left edge of the niche, all damaged.
