Seated Buddha statue flanked by two standing bodhisattva statues, Niche 12, Beishan Rock Carvings (北山石刻) Anderl, Christoph

Description

This niche is located in Beishan Rock Carvings (北山石刻), Fowan (佛灣), Dazu (大足) District, Chongqing. A seated Buddha statue flanked by two bodhisattva statues is depicted. The Buddha statue wears a necklace and a robe draped over the left shoulder, leaving the right shoulder bare. Its left hand and right arm are damaged. The upper part of its head is also destroyed, but a halo trimmed with lotus petals remains. The pedestal of the statue is a Sumeru throne. A square screen with small square holes is depicted behind the Buddha statue. Bas-reliefs of a tree crown and a pair of feitian 飛天 (Sanskrit: apsaras) are carved above the screen. The feitian figures are severely eroded. The bodhisattva on the left of the Buddha rides a lion, while the one on the right is sitting on an elephant. Both bodhisattvas and their vehicles are badly eroded. Metadata created by: Sau Ling Wendy Yu.
