Niche 48, Qianfo zhai (千佛寨) Anderl, Christoph

Description

This is niche 48 in Qianfo zhai 千佛寨, Anyue xian 安岳縣, Sichuan sheng 四川省. It presents a seated buddha in the center, flanked by two bodhisattvas, multiple figures seated on small lotus pedestals, and two guardian kings. All the figures have been beheaded and had their hands removed, but it is possible to identify the two standing figures flanking the central seated figure as bodhisattvas on the basis of their accessories. The hands of the central buddha, now missing, seem to have been joined below the chest, in a position resembling a meditation mudra (Ch. dingyin 定印), which characterises buddhas such as Śakyamuni and Amitābha (Ch. 阿彌陀佛 Amituofo). The small figures seated on lotus pedestals may represent individuals reborn in the Pure Land.
