Eroded niche with unidentified images, Qianfo zhai (千佛寨) Anderl, Christoph

Description

This niche is located in Qianfo zhai 千佛寨, Anyue xian 安岳縣, Sichuan sheng 四川省. The dating is uncertain. The photo is taken from the upper left. This group of seven images is not easily identifiable since they are badly eroded and their faces missing. The one in the center is seated on a lotus throne, flanked by three figures on each side. All seven images have halos, that of the central figure being particularly complex and ornate. This central figure might be a buddha, while the two statues on either side are plausibly disciples. Next to them appear to be two bodhisattvas. Three characters are written on the lintel of the niche; two of them are da 大 and fo 佛. The leftmost one is difficult to make out.
