Niche 15, Qianfo zhai (千佛寨) Anderl, Christoph; Yu, Sau Ling Wendy
Description
This niche is located in Qianfo zhai 千佛寨, Anyue xian 安岳縣, Sichuan sheng 四川省. There is one buddha flanked by two bodhisattvas, all standing on lotus platforms. The head of the buddha is damaged. However, an oval-shaped halo behind the head is still extant. The face of the bodhisattva on the right of the buddha is also damaged. Both bodhisattvas have round halos. The outer frame of this niche is decorated with floral motifs. The dating of the niche is uncertain. However, the floral motif of the outer frame is a pattern commonly adopted during the Tang Dynasty. Based on the pigments on the statues, they were probably repainted in the late Qing Dynasty or even more recently. The photographs show: An overview of the complex from the left angle [1]. A diagram indicating the location of niches and the inscriptions (prepared by Sau Ling Wendy Yu) [2]. A close-up of the niche from the left angle [3]. Metadata created by: Sau Ling Wendy Yu.
