Niche with a Thousand-armed Guanyin and six other figures, with a smaller niche located to its right, Qianfo zhai (千佛寨) Anderl, Christoph

Description

This niche is located in Qianfo zhai 千佛寨, Anyue xian 安岳縣, Sichuan sheng 四川省. It depicts seven figures (statues are numbered left to right). The only one that can be identified is a Thousand-armed Guanyin (Ch. Qianshou Guanyin 千手觀音). All the seven statues, including this latter, are missing of heads and arms. Statues 1 and 7 are seated on lotus pedestals; while the others are standing. Besides the Thousand-armed Guanyin, statues 1, 3, and 6 display a range of accessories that reflect the iconography of bodhisattvas while statues 4 and 5 wear monastic garb and are probably buddhas. However, since heads and hands have been removed or destroyed no precise identification is possible. While most of Thousand-armed Guayin's additional hands show signs of weathering, image [7] shows the lower hands holding what looks like a string of beads. Photograph [8] shows a hand holding an unblossomed lotus flower.
