Sixteen arhats in niche 33, Yuanjue dong 圓覺洞 Anderl, Christoph

Description

Niche 33 in Yuanjue dong 圓覺洞, Anyue xian 安岳縣, Sichuan sheng 四川省 displays a seated Buddha in the center along with with sixteen arhats on both sides[1]. Below the Buddha there is an inscription of the Uṣṇīṣavijayā-dhāraṇī (Ch. Foding zunsheng tuoluoni jing 佛頂尊勝陀羅尼經) [2]. On either side of the Buddha, arhats are seated on rocky bases in two rows and they makes different gestures or carry different monastic objects such as an alms bowl, water bottle, scroll or staff [3][4].
