Overview of niches 12, 13, and 14, Yuanjue dong 圓覺洞 Anderl, Christoph

Description

This picture provides an overview of niches 12, 13, and 14 (from right to left) in Yuanjue dong 圓覺洞, Anyue xian 安岳縣, Sichuan sheng 四川省. The opening of niche 12 is almost square, with the lintel arching up slightly. An inverted concave (凹-shaped) altar-like structure is carved along the three walls of the niche, its height approximately one third that of the cave wall. A notch is carved in the altar toward the middle wall. Just below the notch is a "ground-beam groove" (Ch. difu cao 地栿槽). In the upper right of the middle altar there is a rectangular recess, which might have been used to hold cultic images. On the top of the altar, along the right wall, stands a Qing dynasty (1644-1911) stele [1]. Given uncertainty about the original function and appearance of this structure, Prof. Yang Xiaodong has suggested that labelling it an "altar" (Ch. tan 壇) may be problematic.
