Statue at waist of the Reclining Buddha, Wofo yuan 臥佛院 Anderl, Christoph

Description

This statue is located at the waist of the reclining Buddha (Wofo 臥佛) at the Wofo yuan complex 臥佛院, Anyue xian 安岳縣, Sichuan sheng 四川省. The figure sits with his back to the viewer. It is 3.4 meters high and its identity is still unclear. Some scholars propose that the statue portrays Subhadrā (Ch. Xubatuoluo 須跋陀羅) while others believe that it represents Ānanda (Ch. Anantuo 阿難陀). His right hand is placed on the wrist of Buddha’s left hand, the thumb is upturned, the index finger and middle finger are slightly bent and pressed down while the ring finger and little finger are naturally bent, as if he is carefully examining the form of the Reclining Buddha.
