Upper layer of Reclining Buddha, Wofo yuan 臥佛院 Anderl, Christoph

Description

A group of statues located on the upper layer of the Reclining Buddha (Wofo 臥佛) at the Wofo yuan complex 臥佛院, Anyue xian 安岳縣, Sichuan sheng 四川省, showing the assembly with scenes of the Buddha teaching before entering Nirvana. There are a total of 21 statues above the reclining Buddha. In the middle is a seated statue of Śākyamuni 2.3 meters high. There are two rows of statues on either side of this central figure. On the right side of the front row are statues of three disciples, a Bodhisattva, and a representation of Guhyapāda (Ch. Miji Jingang 密跡金剛). In this group it is paired with Nārāyaṇa (Ch. Naluoyna Jingang 那羅延金剛). To the left of the Buddha are statues of four disciples and one Bodhisattva. In the second row there are two additional disciples on either side of the Buddha. Adjacent to these figures are statues portraying Aṣṭasenā (Ch. Tianlong babu 天龍八部).
