Peak Sanctuary of Petsofas Dewan, Rachel
Description
Situated in the far east of Crete, the hill of Petsofas rises just south of the ancient settlement of Palaikastro (also known as Roussolakos). In the Bronze Age, a religious sanctuary sat atop its 270 m summit, one of many so-called "peak sanctuaries" uncovered at elevated peaks across Crete. Petsofas, however, was the first of this shrine type to be noted and investigated, its large quantities of ceramic figurines suggestive of a particular Minoan ritual practice.
