Heliopolis Project Dietze, Klara
Description
In 2012, the Heliopolis Project, our Egyptian-German joint venture project under the direction of Dr. Aiman Ashmawy (Egyptian Ministry of Tourism and Antiquities) and Prof. Dr. Dietrich Raue (University of Leipzig), started to excavate various areas of the site. As this is an ongoing project, our research is constantly increasing the general knowledge and information about Heliopolis, a major cult centre of Ancient Egypt. It is located in the modern suburb of Matariya northeast of Cairo. Heliopolis was active throughout the Pharaonic history of ancient Egypt, and dedicated in particular to the different manifestations of the solar gods, Khepri, Ra-Horakhty, and Atum, though there were also elements dedicated to aspects of Hathor and Osiris. This was an important cult centre also for festivals related to the jubilee festival of the king.
