The Ligong Pagoda at the Lingyin Temple (靈隱寺) Baycroft, Anne

Description

Lingyin monastery (or Lingyin Temple, 靈隱寺) was founded by Indian monk Huili (慧理) in 328 CE during the Eastern Jin dynasty (東晉朝, 265-420). Over the centuries the temple grew to become one of the greatest centres of Chan Buddhism. Outside of the Lingyin temple sits the a six sided, seven-storey Ligong Pagoda (理公塔). It is also know by the name Lingjiu Pagoda (靈鷲塔). This pagoda houses the remains of the eminent Indian monk Huili, founder of Lingyin Temple. The original date of its construction is unknown, however it was reconstructed in 975 as well as in 1590. The pagoda is engraved with the Diamond Sutra (金剛經) on the second storey [DSC_2120, DSC_2126 and DSC_2132], and the Bright and Pure Land on the third storey [DSC_2119, DSC_2121, DSC_2125, DSC_2127, DSC_2131 and DSC_2135].
