Description

There are all together 9 caves in the Sutra Storage Cave area of Shijing Mountain. They were officially numbered when they were unearthed in 1965, as numbering of the caves was needed to arrange rubbings of the stones. Cave No. 1 and No. 2 were chiselled by Huixian, Jingwan's (靜琬, d. 639) disciple during the Kaiyuan(開元)era of the Tang dynasty (618-907). 972 slabs of stone sutras are stored in Cave No. 1, 1,018 slabs in Cave No. 2. These sutras were carved during the Kaiyuan(開元)and Tianbao(天寶)era of the Tang dynasty. Photo 2224 shows the sealed entrance to cave No. 1, photo 2226 shows the entrance to cave No. 2.
