Horizontal and vertical bands in house reconstruction Suji, Manoj

Description

Earthquake resistant building technologies have been empahsised in the reconstruction process after the 2015 earthquake irrespective of the materials used. This building represents a good example of an earthquake resistant building practice. Here, the large cornerstones are all aligned properly, the walls have been reinforced with horizontal bands, and vertical bands have been used externally as in the upper storey to secure the wall. Taken during the 3rd phase of fieldwork conducted by the research team based at Social Science Baha in Kathmandu, Nepal, as part of the SSHRC Partnership Development Grant, ‘Expertise, Labour and Mobility in Nepal’s Post-Conflict, Post-Disaster Reconstruction’. This image is part of a collection produced by the collaborative research partnership, ‘Expertise, Labour, and Mobility in Nepal’s Post-Conflict, Post-Disaster Reconstruction’, which was funded by SSHRC Partnership Development Grant 890-2016-0011 from 2017-2021. Additional support was provided by the Peter Wall Institute for Advanced Studies, the Faculty of Arts, the School of Public Policy & Global Affairs, and the Department of Anthropology at UBC. Sara Shneiderman (Associate Professor, Anthropology and School of Public Policy & Global Affairs, UBC) served as Principal Investigator, along with Co-Investigators Philippe Le Billon (Professor, Geography and School of Public Policy & Global Affairs, UBC) and Katharine Rankin (Professor, Geography and Planning, University of Toronto).
