Horizontal and vertical bands in house reconstruction Suji, Manoj

Description

Earthquake resistant building technologies have been empahsised in the reconstruction process after the 2015 earthquake irrespective of the materials used. This building represents a good example of an earthquake resistant building practice. Here, the large cornerstones are all aligned properly, the walls have been reinforced with horizontal bands, and vertical bands have been used externally as in the upper storey to secure the wall. Taken during the 3rd phase of fieldwork conducted by the research team based at Social Science Baha in Kathmandu, Nepal, as part of the SSHRC Partnership Development Grant, ‘Expertise, Labour and Mobility in Nepal’s Post-Conflict, Post-Disaster Reconstruction’.
