Foundation work of a new building Limbu, Bina

Description

Modern building codes and materials are widely used in the urban centres for (re)building houses, as seen in this foundation work for a new building. Houses in core urban centres are also built on small land spaces, restricting the size of the plinth. In order to meet family needs, the houses therefore have to be many storeys tall, creating earthquake hazards in the process. Taken during the 1st phase of fieldwork conducted by the research team based at Social Science Baha in Kathmandu, Nepal, as part of the SSHRC Partnership Development Grant, ‘Expertise, Labour and Mobility in Nepal’s Post-Conflict, Post-Disaster Reconstruction’.
