Two workers sifting sand Suji, Manoj

Description

The sand that is required for use in construction is often unwashed and unsifted at its source in the riverbank, so it needs to be sifted through fine mesh to be usable in construction. Even then the sand might not meet the desired quality for construction, but there is often no other option as building materials were scarce in the reconstruction period after the 2015 earthquake. Taken during the 1st phase of fieldwork conducted by the research team based at Social Science Baha in Kathmandu, Nepal, as part of the SSHRC Partnership Development Grant, ‘Expertise, Labour and Mobility in Nepal’s Post-Conflict, Post-Disaster Reconstruction’.
