Roofing slates by a temporary shelter Limbu, Bina

Description

Slates are still popular as roofing material in rural parts as long as they are easily procured, but they are being replaced by corrugated sheets when procuring them is possible due to convenience and rapid installation. However, their use is prohibited under the new building codes so they cannot be used as roofing materials but are instead supplied to urban centres where they are popular as paving stones. Taken during the 1st phase of fieldwork conducted by the research team based at Social Science Baha in Kathmandu, Nepal, as part of the SSHRC Partnership Development Grant, ‘Expertise, Labour and Mobility in Nepal’s Post-Conflict, Post-Disaster Reconstruction’.
