Sand and gravel lying by the roadside to be transported Limbu, Bina

Description

Materials used in reinforced concrete construction have to be brought in to rural areas exclusively from market towns and riverbeds further down the valley or slope. This raises the cost of construction significantly and makes it unaffordable for many of the households, although such structures are perceived to be long-lasting and especially strong during earthquakes. Taken during the 1st phase of fieldwork conducted by the research team based at Social Science Baha in Kathmandu, Nepal, as part of the SSHRC Partnership Development Grant, ‘Expertise, Labour and Mobility in Nepal’s Post-Conflict, Post-Disaster Reconstruction’.
